I am Ebhomielen Ofure Mary, a 2018 first-class graduate of Computer Science, University of Ibadan. I am a native of Uromi, Esan North-East, Edo State, the second of six children in my family, and I was born on the 9th day of December 1997.
I attended Carol Nursery and Primary School, Ikeja, where I was awarded the best graduating student in 2008. I moved on to Louisville Girls High School, Ijebu-Itele and graduated in 2014. I had my tertiary education at the University of Ibadan, where I graduated with a perfect CGPA of 7.0.
During my stay in the University of Ibadan, I was involved in a number of extracurricular activities ranging from debating to community development programs to being a part of mentorship programs to organising tech events, social events, attending conferences and seminars, etc. I believe these helped shape me into being a well-rounded student.
I served as the assistant class representative from my 100 level down to my 400 level, served as the Treasurer of the National Association of Computer Science Students in 300 level, and chairperson of the planning committee for a prestigious cultural day event in 400 level.
From August 2017 to March 2018, I interned at Konga Online Shopping as a software engineer. That experience exposed me to the world of software development, entrepreneurship, problem-solving, and the impact of technology in society.
In October 2018, I was a worthy recipient of the Dean’s roll of honour award which is a meritorious award for exceptional academic performance.
In October 2018, I was chosen as one of the three representatives of the University of Ibadan for the Nigerian Universities Programming Contest Cup, which was held in Abuja. Following my dogged contribution to teamUI, the University is now being recognized as one of the top 5 institutions in Computer Science and programming.
In my free time, I enjoy reading articles on Medium, Flipboard, or Quora on Pop culture, psychology, tech, organising and cleaning hacks, finance, and any other thing that catches my fancy. I also try to find new ways to organise my personal space, using Pinterest as a major source of motivation. From time to time, I take online courses in different fields in technology, basically testing the waters and staying abreast with new technologies.
For my final year project, I worked on a Natural Language Processing system aimed to summarize medical case notes. My research paved the path to a profound interest in Data Science and Machine Learning. I plan to take it up from there in my Master’s degree.
Upon the completion of my studies, I was awarded the best graduating student of the Department of Computer Science and also of the Faculty of Science.
Most of my career interests lie in design and programming, so presently, I am honing my front-end web development skills in a bid to being a world-class developer.
A saying goes thus, “Success is what you make it”. With this in mind, I believe that all the efforts we put in now, determine the kind of future we would have. With that in mind, I try to act every day, the way I would if I were the CEO of some multinational company, by embracing challenges and seeking to grow daily. That way, I am sure to make decisions that would lead me towards a fruitful life.
